The US has suffered a double blow to its mission in Afghanistan.
First, President Hamid Karzai asked US to pull its troops out of rural towns and an immediate handover of security responsibilities.
Secondly, the Afghan Taliban has called off preliminary talks with the Americans.
However, the White House has insisted it remains committed to reconciliation talks to end the decade-old conflict.
